Frequently Asked Questions

Do you honestly believe in ghosts and aliens? Of course! I couldn’t write about them if I wasn’t a believer. My late mother had many experiences with ghosts, most of them good ones that lifted her, um, spirits. She even claimed to have seen UFOs when she was a child in Indonesia. Her stories really fed my imagination. So did shows like ‘The X-Files’ and magazines like ‘The Unexplained’. My dad was into sci-fi books, movies and TV shows. ‘Star Wars’, ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Battlestar Galactica’ were popular staples in our houseshold.

Have you ever seen a UFO or a ghost? I don’t think I’ve seen a UFO, but I have experienced ghostly activity in homes I’ve lived in. My current home is said to be haunted. I had a memorable hotel stay where there were unexplained knocks on a wall behind the bed — I was on the 12th floor and the wall faced an alleyway. On my second night there, I dreamed of being pulled out of bed by my feet. When I woke up, I had a huge bruise that went through the thickness of my right foot. Hmm…

Are you scared of the prospect of alien abduction? YES. Aren’t you? But I suppose if I ever met a bona fide extraterrestrial, I’d want to get to know them and find out about their planet and culture.

What’s your favourite book? It’s super hard to pick just one! But I’ll say one of my most treasured childhood books is ‘Black Beauty’ by Anna Sewell. I still have the copy I bought when I was about 10 years old with my pocket money. It’s a 19th-century story told in the point of view of a horse. For a long time after I first read it, I really believed I understood what went through horses’ minds!

Why do you post so many cat photos on Instagram? I love all kinds of animals, but right now I share my life with two very special rescue cats. One is a very energetic marbled Bengal (with so-called ‘undesirable’ markings—pfft!) and the other is a sweet tabby. Both are incredibly photogenic and always striking cute poses.
